| Choti Diwali 2019 |
Choti Diwali will be celebrated on October 26, 2019.
Story Behind Choti Diwali:
According to legends, there was a demon named Narakasura who was the king of the state of Pragjyotishpur. He defeated Indra in battle and snatched the earrings of Mother Goddess. Not only this, he had kidnapped 16 thousand daughters of gods and rishis and kept them captive in his religion. Seeing the misery of Narakasura towards the Christians, Satyabhama requested Krishna to be given an opportunity to kill Narakasura. It is also believed that Narakasura was cursed that he would die at the hands of an ironing.
Satyabhama went to battle in a chariot run by Krishna. In that war, Satyabhama defeated Narakasura and killed him and left all the girls.
This day is called Naraka Chaturdashi. Chhoti Diwali is also celebrated on this day. The reason for this is that Bhukdevi, the mother of Narakasura, had announced that the day of her son's death should not be remembered as a mourning but as a festival.
